The risk of thunderstorms is increasing with climate change and are most likely to occur in spring. Although not that common, thunderstorms are the most dangerous weather event and you’re particularly vulnerable on the water, so it’s worth thinking about the action you should take if caught in one.
Firstly, it’s important to re-emphasise the importance of checking the weather forecast before any paddle. If it looks as though it’s going to be stormy, I recommend not paddling at all.
If a thunderstorm catches you by surprise when on the water, it’s really important to get to the bank and away from the water as quickly as you can. Water transmits strikes from further away than on land. Don’t attempt to paddle back to the club or your car until the storm’s over.
If possible get into a building or car. Leave your paddle and boat at the bank. Don’t shelter under isolated trees. If you have nowhere to shelter then crouch down with your head tucked in to keep yourself a small a target as possible.
